Barrett Martin Group Live in Seattle Feb 11

Barrett Martin Group @ Vito's

Hey Folks,

We’re continuing to celebrate the Barrett Martin Group’s new album “Atlas”, and we’re having another show at Vito’s supper club on Capitol Hill in Seattle. The BMG will be playing our unique style of “Heavy Jazz” pulling tunes from all 4 of our albums, with a special emphasis on “Atlas.” Vito’s of course is the legendary dinner club that has been remodeled into the hippest, swinging’est, dinner club/jazz venue in Seattle. It’s a free show (!) and it’s usually a packed house, so reserve your tables early on.

Featuring the best and brightest in Seattle’s jazz scene:

Dave Carter – Trumpet
Joe Doria – Piano
Paul Fischer – Guitar
Kevin Hudson – Bass
Barrett Martin – Drums
Ben Thomas – Vibes
Ed Ulman – Trombone

Van Conner’s Strange Earth Records Announces The Latest Release – YB’s “Altered Steaks”

I present to you another Strange Earth Records release for your enjoyment and review. – Van Conner

Featuring Matt Vandenberghe of VALIS

Check out a great review of the record at 6 Days From Tomorrow.

Sometimes, the hardest part of writing up one of these things is knowing where and how to start.  Like this one for example.  I’ve had a dull week at work where nothing much has happened except for me getting a movable-type rubber stamp which I have been duly abusing for days on end (my personal fave can be viewed here), the predicted snow chaos didn’t happen anywhere near here and so held little interest, and that’s about it.

So it was nice to have the mundanity scuppered by the surprise arrival of this record from Seattle’s YB’s, a band I know next to nothing about (let alone what the YB stands for) making music that largely defies a cohesive description.  Of course, I could read and relate the info that accompanied this, but I always feel that doing so is cheating slightly, as well as ruining the surprise…

Mr. Lanegan

On first listen to 2012′s Blues Funeral (out February 7th on 4AD), fans will notice that Mark Lanegan has expanded his familiar sound. There’s no hiding that raw, smoky voice, but musically the album stretches out further than 2004′s Bubblegum. Familiar dark bluesy rockers like “Bleeding Muddy Water” are counterpointed with sweeping electronics-heavy numbers like “Ode To Sad Disco.” Here, thumping drum machines and keyboard washes are just as likely to be found as scorching guitars. Thematically, though, the album is unwaveringly dark, as you’d expect from titles like “Phantasmagoria Blues,” “Gray Goes Black,” and “The Gravedigger’s Song.” Through it all, Lanegan is joined by some familiar friends: Dulli, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Jack Irons, Porno for Pyros’ Martyn LeNoble, QOTSA’s Josh Homme, and Eleven guitarist and producer Alain Johannes. Together they create a magical concoction, and if it’s said that the entire genre of the blues has actually died, through Mark Lanegan Band and Blues Funeral they’re positively reborn.
